Procter & Gamble, the consumables company, is planning to use sugar cane-based plastics for packaging on a number of its brands from next year, including Covergirl, Max Factor and Pantene Pro-V.

P&G made the announcement today, saying it would be, over the next two years, piloting the new packaging globally. The first products in the new packaging are anticipated to be on the shelf by 2011.

Brazil-based Braschem is the manufacturer of the HDPE material from sugar cane. It is said to be completely recyclable in current reprocessing facilities.

Global group president for P&G beauty, Gina Drosos, claims that it was consumer demand that led to the move to sugar cane-derived plastics.

"As we talk to women around the world, they tell us that they want to make themselves more beautiful without making their environment less beautiful," said Drosos.

Last year Coca-Cola launched its PlantBottle made from sugar cane and molasses-derived PET.

P&G vice president of global sustainability, Len Sauers, said the usage of the new material was just another step in the company's sustainability commitment.

"P&G is making significant progress in environmental sustainability through our work with external partners," he said.
