According to The Waste and Resources Action Programme's (WRAP) latest plastics market situation report, between 2007 and 2009, plastic packaging recycling increased by 27%. However demand for recovered food-grade material is still far too high for supply.
The report found that an impressive 590,000 tonnes of plastic packaging was recycled last year. This amount was up 14% and 27% on 2008 and 2007 respectively.
Firms looking to invest in plastics recycling would be best taking advantage of the conflict between demand and supply, according to Wrap.
Wrap director of market development, Marcus Gover, said: "There has been extensive investment in plastics reprocessing capacity however, the UK still exports a large proportion of the plastics it collects for recycling.
"Given the strong UK demand for high-quality recycled plastics, this represents a great opportunity for UK manufacturers," he added.
Mixed, non-bottle plastic films and trays are a particularly strong case, as they account for just under half of plastic packaging use, yet are one of the worst in terms of collection as currently, less than 5% is recycled.
The organisation launched a £2m loan fund to support investment in mixed plastics recycling last month. |
